Tariff Update: Subaru's Strategy for Navigating Import Changes
April 4, 2025
The recent implementation of a 25% tariff on imported vehicles has created significant shifts in the automotive market, with varying impacts across manufacturers based on their production locations. For Subaru shoppers, understanding which models are built in the United States versus Japan can make a substantial difference in potential pricing. As tariffs reshape the industry landscape, Subaru has developed a strategic approach to maintain stability while continuing their impressive sales momentum of 32 consecutive months of growth.
U.S.-Built Subaru Models: Limited Tariff Impact
Good news for many Subaru shoppers! Several popular models are manufactured at Subaru's Indiana plant and will largely avoid the new 25% import tariffs.
Japanese-Built Models: Tariff Considerations
The remainder of Subaru's lineup is manufactured in Japan and will be subject to the new tariff structure. These include:
Most Crosstrek models
- Forester
- Impreza
- WRX/STI
- BRZ
- Solterra
Subaru's Proactive Approach
Despite these challenges, Subaru is leveraging its experience with past market disruptions to maintain stability. The company recently celebrated its best sales month since August 2019 and its 32nd consecutive month of month-over-month sales increases. "Every brand in the industry will have their own challenges, a few somewhat less than us, but others certainly more. As we have done over recent history—the 2008 financial crisis, 2011 tsunami, COVID, or the semi-conductor shortage—we are focused on what we can control and being successful on our terms," said Jeff Walters, president and COO of Subaru of America, in an April newsletter.
Subaru is actively developing strategies to navigate these changes, including:
- Meeting with the National Retailer Advisory Board on April 8-9
- Conducting an all-retailer call on April 11 to assess tariff impact and discuss next steps
- Targeting 56,000 unit sales in April despite market uncertainties
What This Means For Buyers
If you're considering a Subaru purchase, these developments create some strategic considerations:
- U.S.-Built Models: The Ascent, Legacy, Outback, and select Crosstrek models offer minimal tariff exposure
- Current Inventory: Japanese-built models already on our lot may maintain pre-tariff pricing for a limited time
- Pre-Tariff Savings: Some dealerships are offering special pre-tariff discounts on select models
